As Nelson Mandela passes away at the close
of 2013, it’s a big reminder to the rest of our African presidents. Mr. Mandela
will remain an icon to the African people, first as a constant reminder that
they can rise beyond their recent challenges to achieve freedom and eventual
prosperity in all aspects of their lives. His life has inspired many leaders of
tomorrow not only in Africa, but the rest of the world at large.
There however still exists a paradox,
especially in some of our African settings! A great leader lives and with
values that everybody ought to emulate, but we still find several opposites of
what Mandela fought for. We live in such paradoxical times! Am sure most of the
African presidents will send out several condolence messages, probably all
feeling sorry and what a great loss to the continent he has been at large. I
think our leaders should use this time to reflect on their situation; are they
fighting for the right values? Are they serving everyone or are they ripping
their citizens off? Such questions should at least pop up as we celebrate the
life of Mr. Mandela Nelson.
This does not go to only current African
leaders but is also a reminder to all of us serving the greater society. Does
our behavior reflect the kind of service we would expect? Public servants, members
of parliament, and everyone in position of leadership should use this moment to
rectify and straighten out their ways. If we don’t attempt to do this, then we
shall continue to see Africans killing Africans, tribesmen killing fellow
tribesmen and other associated atrocities happening on African soil.
For the youths, Africa is ours to turn a
new page and match up to the greater world with boldness and unmatched
confidence. The life of Mandela is one of those that give us hope that we can
do it irrespective of the circumstances. And for the world beyond Africa,
welcome us with both hands to share ideas and move together for our mutual
development and benefit.
I wish all of us the best in our endeavours, and R.I.P Nelson Mandela!
